ABOUT THE KID
Welcome to the Kennewick Irrigation District
The KID was organized 90 years ago under Washington State law. It took 40 years to get from "organized" to "funded" and "built." For the last 50 years the KID has provided water to agricultural and residential customers within parts of Kennewick, Richland, West Richland and Benton County.
Washington State's irrigation districts operate under Title 87 (among others) of the Revised Code of Washington. Pressurized Service Areas (PSAs) that supply and operate delivery infrastructure for many customers operate under Titles 35 and 87, among others.
Because the Kennewick Irrigation District's water right comes from the Yakima River and is granted by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation, the KID operates under federal rules and regulations, over and above the state law.
The KID provides irrigation water to thousands of landowners for 20,201 acres. The water leaves the Yakima River near the town of Prosser and travels over 11 miles by canal to the Chandler Pump Station on the north side of the river. From there, it is pumped under the river and halfway up the side of the Horse Heaven Hills.
From the head end of the main canal, it requires nearly 90 miles of canals, hundreds of miles of pipes, many siphons and pumps to distribute the water throughout the district. The KID serves ratepayers with a staff of approximately 50 full-time employees from its downtown Kennewick office and shop facility at 2105 South Ely Street.
