ABOUT THE KID

Welcome to the Kennewick Irrigation District

The KID was organized ninety years ago under Washington State law. It took forty years to get from "organized" to "funded" and "built." For the last fifty years the KID has provided water to agricultural and residential customers within parts of Kennewick, Richland, West Richland and Benton County.

Washington State's irrigation districts operate under Title 87 (among others) of the Revised Code of Washington. Local Improvement Districts (LIDs) that supply and operate "last mile" infrastructure for many customers operate under Titles 35 and 87, among others.

Because the Kennewick Irrigation District's water right comes from the Yakima River and is granted by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation, the KID operates under Federal rules and regulations, over and above the state law.

The KID provides irrigation water to thousands of landowners in 20,201 acres. The water leaves the Yakima River near the town of Prosser and travels over eleven miles by canal to the Chandler Pump Station on the north side of the river. From there, it's pumped under the river and halfway up the side of the Horse Heaven Hills.

From the head end of the main canal it takes nearly ninety miles of canals, pipes, siphons and pumps to distribute the water throughout the district. The KID serves ratepayers with a staff of about fifty fulltime employees from its downtown Kennewick offices and shop facility on 21st Avenue and South Ely Street.
