The United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) classified the area which makes up the Kennewick Irrigation District (KID) as “irrigable” in the 1920’s and the canal system was designed by USBR to serve it. The majority of land identified as the Kennewick Irrigation District was primarily farmland at that time.

The loan from the U.S. Government to build the canal system was assigned to the property owners of the KID which included your property. In many cases, parcels were isolated when the land was later developed. Many of these parcels are small and it is not economically feasible for the property owner to install irrigation lines to provide service. You must obtain a right-of-way and install a distribution system from the canal to your parcel in order to receive irrigation service.
